Relaxed and friendly owners showcase local produce

Leigh Ann Byerly arrived in Orland with her husband, Jim, in the spring of 2008 to “temporarily” help her friends manage their restaurant, Farwood Bar & Grill. In November of that year, Leigh Ann’s love for good food and a friendly atmosphere proved to be a perfect fit for the restaurant, and she and her husband took over. These days, Leigh Ann has created not just a friendly gathering place for a good meal, but also a place to sample the region’s incredible bounty of locally produced foods. Locally made olives and olive oil, artisanal cheeses, local wines—these products and more elevate Farwood to far more than just a local eatery.

The varietals of wine produced at Bertagna Son Kissed Vineyards, served at Farwood Bar & Grill, includes Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese

“She has a really nice restaurant that does an excellent job of promoting local agriculture,” says Berton Bertagna of Bertagna Son Kissed Vineyards, which has its wines served at Farwood. That kind of place is exactly what Leigh Ann had in mind. “The opportunity to get to know the people who are making these beautiful products...to see where the food is coming from…is an opportunity like no other.” Enjoying the restaurant’s patio on a warm summer evening, sampling the best of local foods with a perfectly paired local wine—it doesn’t get much better than this, nor more quintessentially Californian.

California’s northeast corner is an outdoor-lover’s paradise, with safe-to-explore volcanoes, hushed forests, and trout-filled rivers. This is the place for blue-ribbon fishing, houseboats anchored in cool lakes, countless campgrounds, and inviting trails for hiking and mountain biking.

"When I first caught sight of it I was weary and 50 miles away and afoot. Yet all my blood turned to wine, and I have not been weary since.”  --Author John Muir, upon seeing Mount Shasta in 1874.

All this, plus friendly towns like Chico and Chester, and inviting rural farms in fertile lands near the Upper Sacramento River. Redding, the region’s largest city, makes a good base, with riverfront trails, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, and elegant Sundial Bridge, designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
