Travel Updates: COVID-19 (Coronavirus)
Here’s the latest information on the respiratory illness, including links to key resources
The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) that originated in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, in late 2019 has now spread to dozens of countries across the globe. The vast majority of infections are in mainland China, with significant outbreaks in South Korea, Japan, Iran, and Italy.
According to the California Department of Public Health, the health risk to the general public in California remains low.
“We applaud the steps federal, state, and regional health officials are taking to protect our communities,” said Visit California President & CEO Caroline Beteta in early March, adding that “California is a safe destination to visit.”
Despite the minimal threat to travelers in California, the respiratory illness is still spreading and the situation is constantly evolving. Travelers are encouraged to follow the below steps to protect themselves against infection:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water
- Do not touch your mouth, nose, and eyes with unwashed hands
- Avoid close contact with those who are sick, and avoid public places if you develop respiratory illness symptoms like fever and cough
